2009 BRN Symposium Workshop 3A:
Publishing in Biospecimen Science (9:30 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.)

Development of Biospecimen Reporting Criteria for Publications

Lisa McShane, Ph.D. (Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis, NCI)
Pierre Hainaut, Ph.D. (International Agency for Research on Cancer)

To initiate a community-based effort that will develop a set of biospecimen reporting criteria for scientific journal editors and submitting authors. The process developed for the REMARK (Reporting Recommendations for Tumor Marker Prognostic Studies) publication, from which recommendations were published in several scientific journals simultaneously, is the targeted model for this set of biospecimen reporting criteria. REMARK and another set of reporting criteria, “Guidelines for Preparing Manuscripts Describing Research in Clinical Proteomics,” from the journal Molecular and Cellular Proteomics, will be discussed.

Identification of a core group of individuals who will take this effort forward to meet regularly and publish, within 1 year, a white paper that will be strategically disseminated to various journals.
